TruffleHog vs Muzzle for AI coding agents
TruffleHog finds secrets in repos, buckets and CI logs, and tells you which still work. Muzzle stops an agent sending them in the first place.
| Feature | TruffleHog | Muzzle |
|---|---|---|
| What it scans | Git, GitHub, GitLab, S3, GCS, Docker images, filesystems, Jenkins, Postman, Hugging Face and more | Commands and requests an agent sends, pages and files it reads, git commits, project folders |
| When | On commit, in CI, on demand | While the agent runs, before the request leaves |
| What it looks for | Over 800 secret types, with a check whether each is live | Key and token shapes, plus your own emails, phone numbers and names |
| Pre-commit hook | Yes | YesFree |
| Prompt injection in what the agent reads | Not its job | Alerts (Pro) |
| Runs on | macOS, Linux, Windows, Docker, CI | macOS 12 or later, Apple silicon |
| License and price | AGPL-3.0, with a paid enterprise product | Free, or Pro at $19 a month |
An agent leaks without committing
A key pasted into a curl command, a request body or an MCP call never reaches a repo, so there is nothing for TruffleHog to find. Muzzle checks those as the agent makes them and blocks the ones that carry a key or your details.

Muzzle Free costs $0 and covers Claude Code hooks, git commit checks, project scans and the settings lock.
